Washington, DC – Reacting to the news that Brooke Ellison has lost her race to incumbent John Flanagan in New York’s 2nd district, Twenty-First Century Democrats called the outcome, “an opportunity lost for progressive ideals in New York.” During the 2006 election cycle, Twenty-First Century Democrats endorsed 34 candidates, including Ellison, all chosen due to their extraordinary leadership abilities.
“We are proud to have endorsed Brooke Ellison this year,” said Kelly C. Young, president of Twenty-First Century Democrats. “Brooke’s inspiring story shows that she is extremely able to overcome adversity and achieve her goals. Her strength and positive message set her apart in politics; she will undeniably make a difference in the lives of the citizens of New York regardless of what she chooses to do next.”
Ellison’s challenge to Republican incumbent John Flanagan in the 2nd state senate district was a key campaign in New York. Brooke ran on a positive message and call for change, promising to create more housing options, secure improved school funding, renovate public transportation, obtain environmental protections, and support stem cell research.
The endorsement of such a small number of candidates nationwide signals a new direction for Twenty-First Century Democrats. “In order to achieve substantive changes in public policy, we need to elect Democrats who will actively support our progressive ideals,” said Young. “Our elected officials need to reach out to America, inspire, and motivate millions of citizens to become involved in their communities. Brooke Ellison is the type of leader who can compel New Yorkers to become active in our democracy once again.”
