Gordon Smith: Running For (and From) The GOP

How damaged is the Republican brand? If Gordon Smith’s new television spot is any indication, the GOP label must be fatal. The Republican Senator is now running an ad that claims Barack Obama credited Smith with helping to “lead the fight for better gas mileage and a cleaner environment.” The only problem: it’s not true. It’s not surprising that Smith would want to tie himself to Obama consider how popular the Democratic nominee is in Oregon, but the truth is Obama never made such a statement about Smith and has strongly endorsed his Democratic opponent Jeff Merkley.
